Meet John Akende, Antoine Vernon and Addison Patterson, three Torontonians emblematic of the reasons why Canada has become the biggest cottage industry of youth basketball.
This new wave of talent isn’t the first to crash into the global scene. First round selects like Andrew Wiggins and Anthony Bennett have led the way and changed the attitude towards ball north of the border.
“The talent has been around a long time, but nobody took it seriously until we got the number one pick,” Akende explained. “We definitely see more scouts at our games now."
“It’s getting more attention. Older generations never had the opportunity that we do,” Vernon said. “Americans are more cautious. Coaches know to be on the lookout”.
And it’s only just begun. “The world is just starting to see what we got up here,” Patterson, who’s projected to be top 10 in the 2020 NBA draft, explained.
Even better for Canadian basketball, these top talents all dream of coming home to wear the red, black, silver and gold. “He wanted to be drafted by the Raptors," Chaudhry says. "Everyone here wants to come home and play here now.” Jay chaudhry is a Toronto-based filmmaker who has been recently assigned to produce sports series.
